San Jose, CA--September 23, 1996--VLSI Technology Inc. (San Jose, CA) announced an advanced MPEG 2 audio/video decoder chip as the cornerstone product of the VISTA (VLSI Integrated Set-Top Architecture) System-Level Silicon solution.
Developed jointly by VLSI Technology and Mediametrics, this chip fills out VLSI's end-to-end VISTA set-top silicon offering. The VES6000 is a single chip, real-time MPEG 2 audio/video decoder solution targeted for consumer applications such as direct broadcast satellite (DBS) receivers, DVD (digital versatile disc), digital cable set-top boxes, and multimedia PC applications.
This new IC has been designed to be a full drop-in replacement device for MPEG 2 decoder devices. As the VES6000 is a next-generation design, it incorporates the latest features, such as an integrated clock-synthesizer, a micro-programmable RISC architecture, true-color on-screen display (OSD), EDO and synchronous DRAM support, as well as the ability to decode full MPEG 2 with full-screen OSD within 16 Mbits of DRAM.
Support for both EDO and Synchronous DRAM guarantees that this design will be supported by both current and future popular DRAM types. Finally, the VES6000's advanced architecture allows it to very efficiently use the memory, freeing more space within the confines of the 16 Mbits of DRAM. This allows the set-top designer to perform full PAL or NTSC resolution MPEG 2 decoding, and still add in high-quality full-screen OSD graphics, without adding any extra memory.
The VES6000 is targeted for consumer applications such as direct broadcast satellite (DBS) receivers, DVD (digital versatile disc) players, digital cable set-top boxes, and multimedia PC applications.
The VES6000 provides a glueless interface to the VES7000 NTSC/PAL video encoder and stereo audio DACs (digital-to-analog converters). For broadcast digital television, the VES6000 again provides a glueless interface to VLSI's VES2030 MPEG 2 transport demultiplexer. For multimedia PC applications, it works seamlessly with graphics controller products.
ENVISION is a PCI-based MPEG 2 audio/video reference platform featuring the VES6000 MPEG 2 audio/video decoder, the VES7000 NTSC/PAL video encoder, an audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC), and a PCI (PC card interface) bus controller. ENVISION plugs into any PCI-based personal computer, accepting compressed MPEG data streams directly input at the board level or received over the PCI bus. For display, the decoded MPEG 2 audio and video can either be directed back over the PCI bus or sent via the VES7000 and audio DAC directly to a television or monitor. The ENVISION reference platform will be available in October.
PROFILE is an all-in-one reference platform showcasing the complete VISTA solution. PROFILE is a complete DVB-compliant satellite or cable integrated receiver decoder (IRD), including either the VES1777 DSS/DVB single-chip satellite receiver or VES1514 DVB single-chip cable receiver, the VES2030 MPEG 2 transport subsystem, the VES0700 set-top peripheral controller, the VES6000 MPEG 2 audio/video decoder, and the VES7000 NTSC/PAL video encoder. PROFILE will come with VLSI-authored firmware and application program interface software, and will be available in October.
The VES6000 is available in a 160-pin plastic quad flat package. Product samples will be available in October with production quantities available beginning in the first quarter of 1997. Unit pricing in 10,000 piece volume is $30. International pricing may vary.
