Las Vegas, NV--November 21, 1996--Raidtec Corp.'s (Roswell, GA) first one Tbyte, 200 Mbyte per second Fibre Channel RAID storage system debuted. Comprised of the Raidtec FibreArray system, the Raidtec FibreRAID controller and 112, nine Gbyte Fibre Channel hard drives, the system represents a complete Fibre Channel RAID solution.
The FibreArray features seven drive bays, three (N+1) power supplies, and fans, with hot replacement of each component. Up to 16 FibreArrays may be cascaded together to give support for up to 112 drives--forming a single array from one FibreRAID-PCI controller providing up to 1 Tbyte of storage.
Each FibreArray comes standard with Raidtec's "Environment Array Manager" (EAM) built in. The EAM supports monitoring and alarm functions for drive, power, fans, and temperature. Additionally, the FibreArray includes RAIDmanLITE, Raidtec's GUI-based disk array management software. RAIDmanLITE provides round-the-clock monitoring for temperature, power, and fans.
The FibreArray implements a dual FC-AL backplane and supports single or dual Port Bypass Modules (PBMs). With a single PBM, a Loop provides full support for hot replacement of drives and protects the integrity of the loop from device failures. The PBM circuitry ensures loop continuity is maintained when a drive fails or is removed from the loop. With two PBMs installed, dual loop operation is enabled, providing an added level of fault tolerance and performance, as well as hot replacement of PBMs.
The FibreArray is designed to be either tower or rack mounted. Eight FibreArrays can be mounted in a 72-inch industry-standard rack cabinet.
FibreRAID-PCI is a Fibre Channel arbitrated loop RAID caching controller which, when combined with the FibreArray, offers single or dual loop arrays from one PCI slot. The FibreRAID-PCI implements single or dual ports providing up to 100 Mbytes per second per port. With two FibreRAID-PCI controllers attached to the FibreArray, the throughput potential is doubled to 200 Mbytes per second and an additional level of protection against any single point of failure is achieved.
FibreRAID-PCI implements multiple concurrent virtual arrays, all supporting RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, 3, and 5. Configuration is flexible as each pool of drives may be divided into sets of different quantities of drives, with each set configured for different RAID levels. Hot replacement drives and hot global spare drives allow for automatic, unattended rebuild.
From 8 to 128 Mbytes of cache are configurable on the FibreRAID controller as read or write cache with an optional removable battery-backed write cache module providing for added protection in the case of a controller failure. The cache controller manages the cache in an interleaved scheme to provide internal throughput of up to 266 Mbytes per second.
The FibreRAID-PCI comes with management, administration, and device driver software including RAIDman and the device driver kit. RAIDman provides complete RAID configuration, diagnostics, monitoring, and alarm functions for all FibreRAID-PCI features and a single management window for up to 16 FibreArrays regardless of the number of FC-AL drives. The device driver kit includes support for Novell 3 and 4, Windows and NT, Mac O/S and SCO UNIX.
The FibreArray and FibreRAID-PCI together have a list price of $9,950 and will be available at the end of December. A typical configuration of a single FibreArray subsystem and FibreRAID-PCI controller providing 63 Gbytes of storage, with seven nine Gbyte Fibre Channel drives will list for approximately $32,000.
