Mamaroneck, NY--December 30, 1996--Semiconductor Packaging Materials Co. Inc. (Mamaroneck, NY)) announced that it expects that its fourth quarter results will be below analysts' consensus expectations and that earnings for the fourth quarter will be below prior year levels. The company said that its fourth quarter has been weak at several of its operations, including a decrease in orders for eight-inch silicon wafers which are reprocessed at its American Silicon Products Inc. (ASP) subsidiary (Providence, RI). While ASP processed more silicon wafers in the fourth quarter than in the second and third quarters, its mix consisted largely of smaller diameter wafers which yield lower revenues and profitability.

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
