Ridgefield Park, NJ--December 19, 1996--Samsung Group (Ridgefield Park, NJ) announced the appointment of Kim Kwang-Ho, former vice chairman of Samsung Group and CEO of Samsung Electronics, to head of Samsung's North American operations. Yun Jong-Yong will succeed Kim as CEO of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SEC).
Kim, the driving force behind Samsung's semiconductor leadership, will join the newly-established Samsung Group Operations Committee--composed of eight chairmen--as head of North American operations. Samsung chartered the committee to delegate decision-making power to regional leaders, and thus further transform Samsung from a Korea-based company to a global organization.
As head of Samsung North America (SNA), Kim will drive multi-industry, regional operations including major investments in an Austin, TX, semiconductor fabrication site and vertically integrated manufacturing operations in Tijuana, Mexico. Kim remains chairman of the board of AST Research Inc., a U.S. personal computer maker in which Samsung Electronics owns a 46 percent stake.
Yun Jong-Yong, SEC's new president and CEO, joined Samsung Electronics in 1969, the year it was established. Jong-Yong has served as president of Samsung Japan Corp. in Tokyo (Nov. 1995-present), president of Samsung Display Devices Co. Ltd. (1993-94), president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. Ltd. (1992-93), and president of the Samsung Electronics' Consumer Electronics Division (1992).
