Blue Bell, PA--February 25, 1997--Unisys Corp. (Blue Bell, PA) announced that it is working closely with Intel (Santa Clara, CA) on advanced platform architectures for Intel's future IA-64 Merced processor. This cooperation continues ongoing system architecture work between Unisys and Intel begun in 1991.
Working closely with Intel, Unisys is applying its systems expertise to deliver a high-end symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) system that will be able to support both IA-32 and IA-64 Intel processors, enabling Unisys end users and OEM customers to efficiently deploy Intel's IA-64 processor technology.
Unisys said it expects to be a leading supplier of Merced processor-based systems as Intel brings IA-64 technology to market in the next several years.
Unisys also reaffirmed its strategy to migrate its MCP/AS and OS2200 operating systems to Intel 64-bit architecture (IA-64) platforms. As part of this commitment, Unisys recently delivered an IA-32 version of the ClearPath HMP NX 4200 enterprise server, which runs the Unisys MCP/AS operating system and applications on an entirely Intel Pentium processor-based SMP platform.
