Mansfield, MA and Milpitas, CA--February 24, 1997--Motorola's Information Systems Group (ISG; Mansfield, MA) and LSI Logic Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced a licensing agreement in which Motorola's V.34 software modems will be embedded into LSI Logic's leading custom semiconductors.
The unique technological convergence is expected to lower cost and offer fast, easy upgrades for next-generation consumer and communications products involving host-based, high-speed modems--helping to grow the market for "intelligent embedded devices" like network computers, Web browsers, interactive play games, and set-top TV satellite and cable receivers.
The alliance will enable Motorola to greatly expand the market for its new software modem technology and LSI Logic to leverage its leadership position in the MIPS-based embedded processor industry.
Motorola's V.34 data/fax/voice software modem technology is part of the company's software communications initiative, focusing on products that utilize central processing resources. LSI Logic will add the software modem function to enhance its CoreWare library of functional building blocks, making it easily available to its customers. Implementing the modem in software increases flexibility, enabling wide-ranging and innovative uses of modem functionality, while lowering overall system cost. This marriage of technologies, for example, enables powerful Internet transactions for devices and appliances beyond the category of computers. Such benefits include inexpensive network computers and Internet appliances, and reduced cost for Internet Service Provider equipment.
