Calgary, Alberta--March 24, 1997--Trident Microsystems Inc. (Mountain View, CA) in partnership with QSound Labs Inc. (Calgary, Alberta) will offer QSurround, QSound Labs' "virtual speaker" technology as part of Trident's Mirage 5.1 software audio module for their previously announced, high-performance 3DImage 975 DVD and 985 DVD graphics controllers for PC OEMs. The graphics controllers were designed to provide increased performance in the critical areas of graphics acceleration and DVD playback.
QSurround is the key enabling technology for playback of DVD multi-channel audio providing accurate audio positioning with only two speakers. Certified by Dolby Labs, QSurround meets the challenge of new multi-channel audio delivery formats and enables decoded Dolby Digital (AC-3) or MPEG2 information to be effectively reproduced across the entire range of playback systems. By creating "virtual speakers" QSurround reproduces the full surround sound effect of multi-channel audio so that surround sound encoded movies and music can be enjoyed with only two speakers. QSurround also creates a surround sound effect when used with Dolby Pro-Logic.
Trident's Mirage 5.1 audio software module, which incorporates Mediamatics' Motion Video Collaborative Compression Architecture, is scheduled to demonstrate for the first time at Intel's Platform for Visual Computing at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
