Berkeley Heights, NJ--April 25, 1997--Two new devices from the Microelectronics Group of Lucent Technologies (Berkeley Heights, NJ) will permit information systems managers to connect computer workstations operating at either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps to the same wiring center.
With these devices, a four-port repeater IC, designated LUC3R04, and a speed-switching IC, designated LUC3S02, each 10 Mbps station can be upgraded as needed, without changing hardware or modifying connections.
The LUC3R04 and LUC3S02 are the most recent additions to Lucent's family of repeater devices for the network equipment market. The LUC3R04 addresses two key segments of the network equipment market--10/100 Mbps segment and the Virtual LAN (VLAN) segment.
The LUC3R04, when used in conjunction with the LUC3S02, can implement multi-port, dual-speed, shared-media repeaters. In this type of application, the LUC3S02 can independently switch traffic from each of several ports onto either a 10- or 100-Mbps LAN segment.
A single LUC3S02 IC and three LUC3R04 ICs can implement a complete 12-port design, and the devices can be cascaded to support as many as 120 ports in a modular fashion.
The LUC3R04 can be combined with ASIC-based switches to implement a 10/100 Mbps multi-segment repeater with full PHY-layer VLAN support. PHY-layer VLAN capability enables MIS managers to maximize the amount of traffic that flows over an enterprise LAN by partitioning the LAN into arbitrary physical segments or broadcast domains.
With repeaters based on the LUC3R04, segments can be remotely configured--via LAN management software--to simplify partitioning of multiple nodes into broadcast domains based on workgroup, departmental, or other boundaries. Both the LUC3R04 and LUC3S02 enhance testability by supporting boundary scan, and through their ability to place all outputs in a high-impedance state for board-level testing.
The ICs operate from a single 5V supply, and are available immediately. Packaged in a 208-pin SQFP, the LUC3R04 is priced at $20 in quantities of 10,000. Packaged in a 208-pin SQFP, the LUC3S02 is priced at $15 in quantities of 5,000.
