Milpitas, Calif.--June 24, 1997--Tatung Science & Technology Inc. (Milpitas, Calif.) has introduced two new 64-bit workstations that utilize 300 MHz of UltraSPARC II processing power.
In addition, Tatung has introduced a new 300 MHz, single-processing workstation that offers an affordable alternative to users who do not require the symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) capabilities of the UltraSPARC II. New pricing on Tatung's existing 200-MHz and 167-MHz Ultra 2-compatible systems has also been announced.
Now shipping, the new UltraSPARC II-based systems include the COMPstation U2300, with two 300-MHz processors; and the COMPstation U1300, with one 300-MHz chip. Both systems, part of Tatung's COMPstation U2MP Series of Sun Ultra 2-compatibles workstations and servers, offer up to 2 Gbytes of memory and feature SMP capabilities. SMP, available as a standard feature, distributes the operating system and applications across multiple processors for faster execution.
The dual-processing COMPstation U2300 delivers performance of 12.3 SPECint_95 and 20.2 SPECfp_95, and 219 SPECint_rate95 and 254.0SPECfp_rate95. The single-processing U1300 offers performances of 12.1 SPECint_95 and 15.5 SPECfp_95, and 110.0SPECint_rate95 and 142.0SPECfp_rate 95 (estimated ratings).
Tatung differentiates its systems from the Sun Ultra 2 line with more drive capacity (up to 18 Gbytes), which is made possible by four drive bays available for expansion peripherals. The bays can be outfitted with two, standard 3.5-in. hard drives; one 5.25-in. CD-ROM drive; and one 5.25-in., 14-Gbyte tape drive or a 3.5-in. floppy disk drive.
COMPstation U2300 and U1300 components and peripherals can be effectively mixed and matched according to customer requirements. Standard configurations include 128 Mbytes of RAM; a 4-Gbyte hard drive; the Solaris (2.5.1 or higher) operating system pre-installed; 2 Mbytes of external cache; a choice of MGX graphics accelerator for full-motion video and 24-bit full-color applications, or Turbo GX graphics; and a 20-in. color monitor. Other standard features consist of a 128-bit UPA slot; a 64-bit slot for Creator graphics cards; four SBus slots; two serial ports; one parallel port; a 100-BaseT Ethernet interface; Fast Wide SCSI-2; a 12-speed CD-ROM drive; and CD-quality, 16-bit audio capabilities.
Options include 2-D or 3-D Creator graphics, Turbo GX, TGX+2 and TGX+4; up to 2 Gbytes of RAM; up to 18 Gbytes of hard disk storage; and ATM connectivity. A wide range of peripherals is also available.
Standard configurations are offered at suggested list prices starting from $22,020 for the model U1300, and from $31,320 for the model U2300.
Tatung has also introduced and is now shipping the COMPstation U Model 300E+, featuring a 300-MHz UltraSPARC processor, four SBus slots and the same performance as the Ultra 2. The COMPstation U300E+, ideal for users who do not require Ultra 2-class, SMP capabilities on the desktop, supports only one processor and up to 1 Gbyte of main memory. The workstation is upgradeable to SMP with a simple motherboard swap. It offers room for more peripherals and other add-ons than Sun's Ultra 1, which is only equipped with two SBus slots. This high-performance system is rated at 110.0SPECint_rate 95 and 142.0SPECfp_rate 95, and 12.1SPECint_95 and 15.5 SPECfp_95 (estimated ratings).
Standard features include Fast Wide SCSI-2, a 100-Base T Ethernet interface, and a choice of MGX graphics for full-motion video and 24-bit color, or Turbo GX graphics. The COMPstation U300E+ is capable of delivering high-performance Creator graphics, including 3-D triangles, vectors, and quads. It also offers 2 Mbytes of external cache for faster performance at the application level than competing systems.
The COMPstation 300E+ is designed to meet the complex graphics needs of medical imaging, molecular modeling, visualization, MCAD, and other applications that involve highly visual computing. Options include 2-D or 3-D Creator graphics, Turbo GX, TGX+2 and TGX+4 graphics; up to 2 Gbytes of RAM; and up to 18 Gbytes of hard disk storage. Standard configurations, which include 64 Mbytes of RAM, a 2-Gbyte hard drive, Turbo GX graphics, the Solaris operating environment, and a 20-in. color monitor, are priced starting from $18,850.
Tatung is offering an Ultra 2-compatible upgrade program for those users of Ultra 1, Ultra 2, and SPARCstation 20-compatible systems who would like to obtain 300 MHz, 64-bit processing capabilities. Current COMPstation U2MP users can simply replace their existing CPU modules to experience the performance increase while maintaining full compatibility with existing applications.
Effective immediately, Tatung has reduced pricing on its COMPstation U2MP workstations and servers that utilize 200 MHz and 167-MHz processors. Reductions of as much as 20 percent are available. Examples include the COMPstation U2200, previously priced at $25,865, and now priced at $20,920 for a system with two, 200-MHz processors, 1 Mbyte of cache per processor, 128 Mbytes of RAM, a 4-Gbyte hard drive, Turbo GX graphics, and a 20-in. color monitor.
