Annapolis, Md.--Aug. 26, 1997--TeleCommunication Systems Inc. (TCS; Annapolis, Md.) and Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, N.J.) announced availability of Short Message Service, an application that enables wireless handsets to be used for new ways of communication.
Developed by TCS, Short Message Service runs on Lucent's Service Node, a key element in Lucent's Wireless Intelligent Network product line.
Short Message Service (SMS) is one of the first wireless applications to conform to North American digital standards. Market availability of SMS follows its successful network-integration testing by Lucent's Communications Software organization.
With SMS, service providers can offer their mobile customers the ability to receive text messages on their SMS-capable wireless handsets via the Internet, desktop e-mail applications, voice mail, and pager networks.
Lucent's Service Node is a flexible resource server that allows service providers to deploy multiple wireless and wireline services. The Lucent intelligent network platform adheres to an open architecture, facilitating its interoperation with other vendors' switches and equipment.
