Maynard, Mass.--Aug. 25, 1997--Digital Equipment Corp. (Maynard, Mass.) and Multipath Corp. (Incline Village, Nev.) announced a breakthrough in matrix processing performance and price/performance. The companies have partnered to provide for a major aeronautics customer a matrix processing solution never before run practically on a general purpose high performance Unix SMP server priced under $1 million.
The problem, which involved solving a 100,000 by 100,000 complex symmetric matrix for multiple solutions, was completed by a Digital 64 bit AlphaServer 8400 5/440 symmetric multiprocessing system and Multipath's Fast Matrix Solver (FMS) software. The AlphaServer system completed the problem in 99 hours. The problem required more than 1.5 petaflops (1500 teraflops) of computer power to solve. The price/performance of the AlphaServer 8400, $234 per megaflop, was much better than the special-purpose machines.
The AlphaServer 8400 system, the most powerful, scalable machine in the AlphaServer product line, include twelve 440 MHz Alpha processors, 4 Gbytes of memory, eight disk controllers with four 4-Gbyte disks per controller. The total list price of the system was $880,000 as configured.
In addition, unlike special-purpose systems the AlphaServer system can be used for other work, including CAD, analysis, and accounting.
