Paris--Feb. 23, 1998--Sagantec (Milpitas, Calif.), developer of the popular physical design migration software known as Design Rule Enforcement and Migration (DREAM), introduced a tool designed to quickly increase the efficiency of developing and optimizing existing hard intellectual property (IP) and cell libraries. The result is a denser, more compact layout in less time.
Companion, a subset of DREAM and meant for compacting existing designs and macro cell libraries, is used by physical layout and cell designers to focus on creating denser layouts without concern for design rule violations. It ensures design rule correctness and minimizes the number of iterations required to make the layout design rule correct. Companion can easily target cell libraries and IP to new process technologies, ensuring process independence.
Demonstrations of Companion and DREAM will be shown continuously now through Wednesday, February 25, during DATE98 at Le Palais des Congres de Paris, Porte Maillot, in the Sagantec Booth #95.
The layout designer of a library element or hard IP would do a rough, preliminary place and route in Virtuoso layout editor from Cadence Design Systems, Inc., and then send the file to Companion--a button near DRC Check on the Virtuoso tool bar. That streamlined flow leverages an interface between DREAM and Cadence's Virtuoso environment developed through the Cadence Connections third-party software program.
Companion examines the preliminary layout and further compacts polygon edges, using DREAM's polygon edge repositioning to render the placement and routing into an optimized physical design. In addition, it automatically guides the designer to a denser layout by pointing out congested areas in the compacted cell. The result is a more optimal layout than could have been achieved without arduous handcrafting.
The first release of Companion focuses on the design of leaf-cells for cell libraries or memory instances. Companion, shipping in volume in June, is priced at $40,000. It will be available for Sun Microsystems Sparcstation running SunOS, Sun Ultra running Solaris, and HP 9000/700 running UX operating systems.
