Paris--Feb. 23, 1998--OrCAD (Beaverton, Ore.) announced new Enterprise Component Information System (CIS) products for information powered design. OrCAD Express CIS and OrCAD Capture CIS are Internet-enabled design applicationsfor programmable logic and system-level design.
Information-powered design allows engineers to manage the use of components and incorporate critical component information at the earlieststages of design. This promotes the reuse of preferred components, permits rapidnew part introduction, and ensures design data integrity so that netlists andbills of materials (BOMs) are right the first time.
OrCAD's new Enterprise CIS solution addresses manufacturing and data integrity issues up front in the design process, to reduce product costs and eliminate delays and surprises. OrCAD Capture CIS and Express CIS incorporate OrCAD's Internet Component Assistant (ICA) for directInternet access to component databases, and Microsoft Open Data Base Connectivity (ODBC) technology for support of popular database applications.
These products electronically connect engineering groups to in-house manufacturer resource planning (MRP) and other databases, intranets, and Internet component databases. The OrCAD Enterprise CIS products automate part selection and placement and the update of parts databases. Thiseliminates much of the manual work required to source, research, and specify electronic parts, and introduce them into designs and corporate parts databases. Thisis a significant productivity enhancement, as engineers often spend 30 percent of their time searching for, analyzing, and documenting information related to components.
OrCAD Enterprise CIS products also allow engineering groups to get startedquickly by helping them create preferred parts databases, using existing designs. Byelectronically processing existing schematic designs that are currently being manufactured, known good parts can be placed in a database for reuse.
By directly connecting to corporate parts databases through Microsoft ODBC, OrCAD Enterprise CIS products let users browse and select from current parts information without having to generate temporary databases. This ensures that engineers are always connecting directly to the latest data. ODBC drivers for Excel, Access, Oracle, SQL Server, Visual Foxpro, and ASCII text are included with OrCAD Enterprise CIS products. Additional ODBC drivers can be sourced directly from third party software manufacturers, providing links to ODBC-compliant MRP, ASP, and PDM systems.
Because OrCAD Enterprise CIS applications use ODBC,companies can scale these CIS products to accommodate larger databases and additional concurrent users, without impacting how the user works.
OrCAD Enterprise CIS Database Explorer enables the user to view more information aboutparts, including data sheets, Web references, application notes, and documents in any format. The browser provides the capability to view the schematic symbol and OrCAD Layout footprint. This ensures the correct part specification.
The Internet Component Assistant in Capture CIS and Express CIS linksthe products to component databases on the Internet. ICA includes a link and a one-year subscription to EDTN's 500,000 part ICselector component database.
With direct check-in of new parts, users can create a temporary partin the database, use that part in their design, and easily replace or promotethat part to a preferred part. Direct check-in enables users to updatetheir design as well as the database.
Part Status Tool Tips provide information on incomplete or out-of-date parts. The Part Refresh feature automatically updates parts in the design with the latest database information. These features ensure that data being used in the design is synchronized with data in the part database.
OrCAD Capture CIS and OrCAD Express CIS are scheduled to ship worldwide inthe second quarter, 1998. OrCAD Capture CIS is $2,995 and OrCAD ExpressCIS is $6,995. Both products include one year subscriptions to Aspect's ICselector from EDTN, plus 90 days of technical support, including access to the OrCAD Design Network. Upgrades are available for registered OrCAD Capture and OrCAD Express customers. OrCAD's products run on all versions of the Windows operating system. For larger engineering groups, the OrCAD Enterprise CIS Services package starts at $16,500 for on-site setup, implementation, and training.
