Atlanta, Ga. -- Feb. 23, 1998 -- Spyglass, Inc. (Naperville, Ill.) at CTIA's Wireless '98 announced its membership in the Wireless Application Protocol Forum. Three of the world's leading manufacturers of wireless devices, Nokia, Ericsson, and Motorola, werefounding members of the WAP Forum. The goal of the WAP effort is to create a network-independent, global wireless protocol that will facilitate a broad array of wirelessdata services. A long-time participant in industry standards efforts, Spyglasssees the WAP initiative as key to establishing the reliable interoperabilityneeded to drive the acceptance of wireless data applications.
In addition to bringing extensive Internet expertise to the WAP Forum,Spyglass will look to provide support for WAP specifications within itswireless solutions. As part of a comprehensive wireless solution,Spyglass provides strategic Internet consulting designed to identify thebusiness and technology issues facing wireless hardware and serviceproviders. Based on this analysis, Spyglass offers highly customizablesolutions which include device technologies, such as browsers and customapplications, and infrastructure technologies, such as contentfiltering, conversion, and caching. All of these technologies can beadapted to support the WAP specification. For example, Spyglass Prism,a content conversion solution which dynamically converts existing Webcontent for use on non-PC devices, could be customized to convert HTMLcontent into the Wireless Markup Language (WML) format proposed as partof WAP. This would quickly expand the amount of content available toWAP compliant devices.
The WAP specifies Internet content anddvanced telephony services access ona digital cellular phones and other wireless terminals. The WAP Forum has drafteda global wireless protocol specification for all wireless networks that will becontributed to appropriate industry and standards bodies. WAP will enablemanufacturers, network operators, content providers, and applicationdevelopers to offer compatible products and secure services on alldevices and networks resulting in greater economies of scale anduniversal access to information. WAP Forum membership is open to allindustry participants. The draft specifications and membership detailsare available at www.wapforum.org.
