Shin Yokohama, Japan--March 24, 1998--Cadence Design Systems, Inc. announced it has expanded its design services capacity with the acquisition of design firm, Excellent Design, Inc. (EXD). EXD originally was established as an independent company in 1990 and was later acquired by Innotech Corp. in 1991. The acquisition adds about 50 chip designers to Cadence's Japanese operations and enhances the Asia-Pacific component of its global Design Factory Network.
The team joins Cadence existing services operations in Japan and will focus on providing ASIC and system-on-a-chip (SOC) design services and library development to the Cadence and Excellent Design customer base of semiconductor, computer, telecommunications, and consumer electronics manufacturers. The combined team represents the largest independent design realization service organization in Japan and adds to the Cadence worldwide organization of more than 1,400 professionals located in 19 design centers.
EXD provides high-performance and high-quality VLSI design and development environments by combining the expertise of ASIC designers, system architecture engineers, and EDA tool engineers.
Cadence and Innotech have a long-standing business relationship in which Innotech serves as the Cadence sales and service channel for its design automation software products. Last year, the two companies extended the terms of their already successful relationship in an agreement that allowed Cadence-Japan to focus exclusively on developing its design services business in Japan. Japan represents one-quarter of Cadence's overall revenues.
