PCB Design Conference West, Santa Clara, Calif.--March 23, 1998 -- OrCAD (Beaverton, Ore.) introduced Release 9.0 of its line of printed circuit board (PCB) design applications: OrCAD Layout Plus, OrCAD Layout, and OrCAD Layout Engineer's Edition.
Menus and dialogs are organized to follow the flow of the PCB design process.New manual routing functionality includes true "T-routing," support for "free vias," improved support for ball grid arrays (BGAs), and support for microBGAs. In addition, the products include a new interface to Cadence's Specctra autorouter product.
Menus and dialogs are organized to better match the PCB design process. The products' interface is more intuitive to learn and use, particularly for occasional users.
Tracks can now start or end on a pad, via, or track segment. When routing, the system automatically shows the nearest eligible attachment point. Thiscapability is especially useful for routing power buses and decoupling capacitors.
Free vias can ease the design of RF and other high-frequency or high-current designs. A new Free Via Matrix feature enables a user to automatically place equidistant vias within a user-specified area, such as a copper area, around the periphery of a copper area, or over an entire board.
Designers can now place fanout vias directly into the BGA pads, or fan them out usingstandard 45 degree "dogbone" patterns. This capability permits the use of components using higher-density packaging.
A full-screen cursor has been added to facilitate alignment of components and tracks. A measurement tool was also added.
This new interface provides access to the Specctra autorouter for placement, routing, and analysis. OrCAD Layout Plus is ideal for full-time board designers creating morecomplex designs. Layout Plus includes Smartroute, OrCAD's powerful gridless autorouter. OrCAD Layout is for those who are designing boards of average complexity and for those who need powerful interactive features, such as point-and-click automatic connection routing. OrCAD Layout Engineer's Edition is specifically for engineers and board designers who do not require an autorouter. Layout Engineer's Edition is especially useful for performing critical component placement and critical routing, for design reviews (particularly when the board designer and engineer are in different locations), and for EDA librarians and ECO implementers and others who need access to the design data.
Release 9.0 of OrCAD Layout Plus, OrCAD Layout, and OrCAD Layout Engineer's Edition are scheduled to ship worldwide in Q3, 1998. In North America, OrCAD Layout Plus is $9,995, OrCAD Layout is $6,995, and OrCAD Layout Engineer's Edition is $2,995. Attractively priced upgrades are available for existing OrCAD Layout customers. Customers whose OrCAD Layout products are covered by a new product warranty or an OrCAD Extended Support Option will receive upgrades at no charge.
