Leuven, Belgium--June 26, 1998--A three-year agreement to demonstrate the feasibility of a mobile MPEG-4 terminal has been signed between Ericsson and IMEC (Leuven). The work will be conducted within the framework of IMEC's Industrial Affiliation Program.
MPEG-4 utilizes concepts such as objects, scalability, and scene composition. Mobile communications is a select MPEG-4 application domain thanks to the availability of different low bitrate coding techniques and advanced error resiliency modes.
Besides cost issues, the most important criteria for the feasibility of mobile MPEG-4 is the need to drastically reduce the power consumption of the proposed architecture. A further challenge is the need to combine the media diversity, scalability, and interaction needed for MPEG-4 with the efficiency of application-specific architectures.
The joint project consists of three modules: the development of an advanced MPEG-4 decoder architecture optimized for high performance and low power, MPEG-4 IP development, and CAD tools for MPEG-4 implementation.
