Siggraph 98 (Booth #1265), Orlando, Fla.--July 20, 1998--3Dlabs, Inc. (San Jose) announced the Oxygen RPM 3D AGP graphics accelerator card. Designed around the third-generation rendering and texture-mapping engine developed by the recently acquiredDynamic Pictures, the Oxygen RPM 2/64 card will use two parallel graphics processors with 64 Mbytes of unified SDRAM graphics memory to provide true color, high-resolution professional 3D graphics performance at a list price of $1,499.
A modular architecture will allow end-users to upgrade to four graphics processors and 128 Mbytes of SDRAM with a snap-on Oxygen RPM x2 expansion card with a list price of $1,199. The upgraded four processor Oxygen RPM is expected to deliver a peak fill-rate of 120 million bilinear filtered pixels-per-second, 60 million trilinear mip-mappedpixels-per-second and a Viewperf CDRS-03 score of over 120. The AGP Oxygen RPM 2/64 and the Oxygen RPM x2 expansion card are expected to be available through value added resellers in the third quarter of 1998. 3Dlabs expects to ship a PCI version of Oxygen RPM 2/64 in the fourth quarter of 1998.
Oxygen RPM will leverage 3Dlabs' PowerThreads technology for multi-threaded OpenGL performance, while accelerating true-color shading, texture mapping, anti-aliasing and transparency in silicon. Oxygen RPM will provide performance for animators, designers and engineers using graphics-intensive 3D applications such as SoftImage|3D, Pro/ENGINEER, Maya, Unigraphics, 3D Studio MAX, SolidWorks, Lightwave 3D, SDRC I-DEAS and Nichimen Graphics' N-World.
Oxygen RPM is expected to feature true-color resolutions up to 1,600x1,200, full stereo display in a window, and dual RAMDACs for seamless support of multiple monitors from a single AGP slot. It uses a unified frame-buffer design, which will allow users tobalance memory usage through customizing screen resolutions,color bit depths, Z-buffer depths and texture storage options to suittheir application needs. Additionally, a new 3Dlabs Control Panel willautomatically tune Oxygen RPM's configuration for the user's selectedapplication.
Oxygen RPM is expected to ship with optimized drivers for Windows NTand a full OpenGL Installable Client Driver. The OpenGL driver usesmulti-threading PowerThreads technology for increased 3D geometry andlighting performance on multiple CPU systems, even if the application issingle-threaded.
When a single Oxygen RPM is used to drive dual monitors, 3Dlabs' driversoftware will enable the user to enjoy a virtual desktop of 3200x1200 attrue-color, with complete freedom over placement of windows on bothOpenGL accelerated monitors.
