Wilsonville, Ore.--July 13, 1998--Mentor Graphics Corp.(Wilsonville) announced that the Defense Advanced Research ProjectsAgency (DARPA) has awarded a major contract option to a team consisting ofMentor Graphics, MEMSCAP S.A. (Grenoble, France), and MCNC (Research Triangle Park, N.C.). Under the terms of the agreement,$1.3 million in funding has been designated for development of an engineeringkit for micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS).
The MEMS engineering kit will be the first product to open up the MEMS design market to non-specialist systems engineers, and it couldreduce product development time by as much as 90 percent. Under the terms of the award, the engineering kit designed by the partners will be the interface between the foundry system engineers unfamiliar withMEMS design and layout. The resultingproduct will be manufactured at the MEMS foundry and product developmentfacility at MCNC.
According to research from Ernst & Young Entrepreneurs Conseil, Paris, France, the MEMS market in 1996 was $12 billion for devices and $34 billion forsystems. Estimates are that by the year 2002, the market will grow to$34 billion for devices and $96 billion for systems.
The MCNC MEMS Engineering Kit will be available directly from MEMSCAP inSeptember. Pricing starts at $50,000. Mentor Graphics and MEMSCAP alsoplan the release of MEMS engineering kits for other MEMS foundries around theworld.
