San Jose--July 13, 1998--Altera Corp. (San Jose)began shipping version 9.0 of its Max+Plus IIprogrammable logic development software.
The Max+Plus II version 9.0 software offers support for Altera's newFlex 10KE device family. Fabricated on a 0.25-m process, the Flex 10KEfamily enhances the Flex embedded architecture. The family offers66-MHz in-system performance and densities up to 250,000 gates.The enhanced Flex 10KE embedded array blocks offer double the amount of RAMas compared to earlier families, as well as dual-port capability.
The Max+Plus II version 9.0 software also supports Altera's new Fineline BGApackages. Fineline BGA packages require less than half the board space ofthe standard BGA packages currently employed for PLDs. The 1.0-mm ballpitch of the Fineline BGA package allows implementation of 256 pins (balls)in 17 square mm, the same amount of space consumed by a 100-pin TQFPpackage.
Timing-driven compilation algorithms in the Max+Plus II version 9.0software can improve design performance between twenty to sixty percent. On average, design performance improved by 10 percent over theprevious release. Additionally, runtimes using timing-drivencompilation are 25 percent faster with the new version.
Version 9.0 also introduces Jam Byte Code, a compiled representation of theJam programming language, which reduces average in-system programmingtime by 25 percent and alsoreduces the total time boards stay on automatic test equipment orprogramming hardware.
Compilation and simulation support for all members of the Flex 10KE device family isavailable within version 9.0. Flex 10KE will be available in Q3 1998. The Max+Plus II version 9.0 development system is available today withprices starting at $995 for the PC platform. All Altera customers currentlyon active maintenance will receive the 9.0 upgrade at no additional cost.
