San Jose, Calif.--August 17, 1998--Altera Corp. (San Jose) announced the availability of the EPF10K100B programmable logic device, the first 0.25-m, 2.5-V member of the Flex 10K family. The EFP10K100B features high performance and low power consumption, while offering pin-for-pin compatibility with 5.0-V and 3.3-V Flex 10K members. The EPF10K100B offers 4,992 logic elements and 24,576 bits of on-chip RAM, to incorporate industry-standard, ready-made megafunctions from Altera's Megacore and AMPPSM programs.
The EPF10K100B utilizes a fully optimized 0.25-m, five layer metal SRAM process and offers 140 MHz 16-Tap, 8-bit FIR filter performance, a performance increase of nearly 84 percent over 0.35-m FPGA devices. The device also uses the continuous Fasttrack Interconnect feature designed by Altera to leverage process metal layers, resulting in additional performance gains and minimum die area. Additionally, themigration to 0.25-m provides a 66 percent power savings as compared to0.35-m FPGAs.
The EPF10K100B architecture supports Altera's patented redundancy feature.This feature allows Altera to bypass imperfections in a die, increasing thenumber of usable die per wafer. Yield improvements brought about byredundancy play a key role in reducing overall silicon cost.
The EPF10K100B features Altera's patented Multivolt interface,which allows designers to seamlessly interface between 5.0-V, 3.3-V, and2.5-V devices in a mixed-voltage environment. The device also includesI/O clamping diodes which are required for electrical compliance with 3.3-VPCI specification. This feature can be selected on a pin-by-pin basis,making it ideal for interfacing between a 3.3-V PCI bus and 3.3-V or 5.0-Vback-end devices.
The EPF10K100B device is supported by Altera's MAX+PLUS II development system for PC and workstation platforms. MAX+PLUS II software provides seamless integration with tools from Cadence, Mentor Graphics, Synopsys, Viewlogic, and other EDA vendors.
The EPF10K100B is available now in 208-pin and 240-pin PQFP packages. Inaddition, it will soon be available in a 256-pin Fineline BGApackage utilizing only 17 mm2 of board area, the same amount of spaceconsumed by a 100-pin TQFP package. Altera projects that volume pricing forthe EPF10K100B will start at $160 in 1,000-unit quantities.
