Santa Clara, Calif.--April 26, 1999--Sky Computers, Inc. (Chelmsford, Mass.) introduced the HPC-1 high performance computing system. The scalable supercomputer achieves 2.7 TFLOPS of computing power in its maximum configuration of 4096 processors. Specifically designed for applications where the highest possible raw performance is required per dollar, HPC-1 is ideal for real time applications either in the laboratory or deployed in the field.
HPC-1 is packaged in single chassis increments of either 6U or 9U form factors. Each chassis can accommodate up to 16 boards. Each 6U chassis provides performance of 42 GFLOPS, each 9U chassis provides 170 GFLOPS. The interconnect, from board-to-board and chassis-to-chassis, is the ANSI standard Skychannel. The first HPC-1 will be delivered to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in Rome, N.Y. in the Spring of 1999. The 256 GFLOP AFRL system includes three 9U chassis with expansion slots available for later upgrade.
Sky's unique Boards-to-Systems architecture, used in the HPC-1, is supported by three key technologies:
- The compute power is derived from off-the-shelf PowerPC microprocessors. The current HPC-1 uses 604e PowerPCs for maximum compute performance. Sky is committed to providing increased performance using Altivec Technology as soon as the G4 PowerPC microprocessors are available.
- The communication interconnect between boards, chassis, and systems is provided by the ANSI standard Skychannel 320 Mbytes/s. packet bus architecture. Multiple Skychannel connections facilitate fast communication throughout the system hierarchy to continually provide maximum system throughput.
- The Skyvec software development tools simplify code development for large multiprocessor systems by automating many of the processes which otherwise would have to be designed or managed by the programmer.
HPC-1 systems are custom configured based upon each customer's needs and specifications. Systems can include Force or Themis single board computers for system management, HIPPI, Fibrechannel I/O, and RAID storage systems. Rugged options are available.
HPC-1 systems are priced beginning at $500,000 and are available for configuration now.
