Paris--April 27, 1999--Sun Microsystems,Inc., (Los Altos, Calif.) announced 440 MHzand 480 MHz versions of its highly integratedUltrasparc IIi microprocessor. Sun alsoannounced the Java Hotspot Performance Enginefor the Sparc processor architecture. Reportedas well by Sun was the shipment of samples of theUltrasparc II at 450 MHz.
The Ultrasparc IIi processor builds on the strengthof the 64-bit Ultrasparc microprocessor familyand adds the functionality of memory controllersand PCI bridge chips to deliver a tightly integratedsingle-chip solution. The Ultrasparc IIi processoris sold both in a single chip and module solution withdedicated external cache. The immediate benefit forsystem designers is reduced system cost alongwith superior overall system performance and easeof design. The Ultrasparc IIi at 480 MHz and 2Mbytes of cache delivers an estimated SPECint95performance rating of 20.2 and SPECfp95performance rating of 22.5.
Samples of the 440 MHz version of the UltrasparcIIi microprocessor will be available by June at acost of $804 in volume. The 480 MHz version will beavailable by the end of the calendar year.
