Portland, Ore.--June 28, 1999--The PCI SpecialInterest Group (Portland) announced the release of the PCI-X addendum tothe SIG membership for formal review.
The membership has 30 days with which to review the newspecification that will double the speed of the currentPCI local bus specification. After the member review period, the PCISIG Steering Committee will formally release the specification in Q31999.
PCI-X is a backward-compatible, high-performance extension of thePCI local bus that addresses the increased input/output (I/O)requirements for today's high-bandwidth applications such as GigabitEthernet, Fibre Channel, Ultra3 SCSI, and graphics. PCI-X supports32-bit and 64-bit operations at frequencies up to 133 MHz, allowingperformance capability of up to 1 Gbyte per second data throughput.
While PCI-X will potentially be used throughout the entirecomputer industry, the initial application of PCI-X is expected to bein server and workstation products with additional applications inembedded systems and data communication environments. In addition toproviding enterprise class I/O performance, PCI-X is focused onprotecting customer investment by providing backward compatibilitywith existing systems and adapters.
In order to help streamline the review process, the SIG willconduct the addendum review electronically, allowing SIG members todownload the addendum directly from the PCI SIG web site athttp://www.pcisig.com/members. The SIG will also receive and reviewcomments electronically.
