Sunnyvale, Calif.--June 28, 1999--Oki Semiconductor (Sunnyvale) announced a new Ethernet-based device for use in local area and campusnetworking applications, the MAC1000 Gigabit Ethernet media access controller (MAC). The MAC1000will bolster networking hardware performance to alleviate the exploding bandwidth requirements andincreasing demands associated with the convergence of data, voice, and video applications acrossenterprise networks.
The company also announced an enhanced version of its MAC8110 8-port 10/100Mbps FastEthernet MAC. The MAC8110 now is available with a generic 16-bit interface, in addition to the PCIinterface. ,p>The Oki Ethernet product line delivers unique features that boost networkmanageability. These features include error-free performance over UTP cable in lengths up to 130meters, a pin-selectable processor interface to either a PCI or a 16-bit connection, and a full set ofcounters for RMON (remote monitoring) statistic gathering.
Oki's Gigabit MAC1000, the ML53102, is a single-chip MAC for Gigabit Ethernet applications. Thedevice combines an Ethernet MAC with an 8B/10B PCS to allow direct connection to aserialization/deserialization (SERDES) device. The MAC1000 operates at a data rate of 1,000 Mbps andsupports gigabit carrier extension and auto-negotiation.
The MAC1000 contains large on-chip independent transmit (4 kbytes) and receive (8 kbytes) FIFObuffers to facilitate high-speed data transfers with the host. The MAC1000 provides support for VLANID and is programmable for the transmission/reception of packet sizes greater than 1,518 bytes andperforms automatic stripping of the VLAN tag upon transmission.
Additional features of the MAC1000 include:
- IEEE 802.3z D3.3 draft specification compliance
- Up to 16 programmable address matches
- Short frame transmission support via packet padding
- Frame-by-frame CRC append
- Management counters for RMON support
Samples of the MAC1000 will be available in July. Production shipments are expected to begin in thelast quarter of 1999. The MAC1000 and MAC8110 are priced at about $41.70 and $36.60, respectively,in production volumes.
