Concurrently, IBM is announcing their newest personal computer system, theIBM PC 300PL, which includes this capability as a standard feature.
The hardware core of the security system is a cryptographic processordeveloped by Atmel that can both store secret keys in nonvolatile memory, andcompute public key functions using those secret keys. Among these functions isgeneration of signatures, secure storage, and transmission of various secretkeys. The IC protects against many of the kinds of breaches that hackers mightuse to gain secret information.
Atmel is now offering the security IC on the open market. IBM willoffer the supporting software stack to other PC manufacturers in support ofopen platform computing.
