Mindspeed Technologies, the Internet infrastructure business of Conexant Systems, today (30 April) entered the competitive merchant market for switch fabric ICs.
The switch fabric transfers data between line cards in high-capacity, high-speed network equipment and determines the overall capacity and key features of the system.
Mindspeed's iScale range will target switches for use in the access and metropolitan segments of the market. Others already in the sector include Vitesse Semiconductor and Power X Networks.
Mindspeed's entry into the switch fabric business follows its acquisition last year of US comms IC specialist HotRail.
The iScale chipset uses a single- stage architecture that allows for compact switch card designs that scale in bandwidth from 40Gbit/s to 320Gbit/s, and makes use of Mindspeed's CMOS-based SkyRail range of transceivers, which offer 3.125Gbit/s of bandwidth.
The two-chip set incorporates a queue manager and a crossbar switch. The device supports all types of data traffic.
Sampling will start in June, with volume output from Q42001.
