Camas, Wash. - Two LED lines from Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas tout advances in package sizes, luminosity and color reproducibility.
The RGB Super-luminosity TAF ("tough and flush") LED is a three-die chip that's said to provide better color reproducibility than other full-color LEDs. And the high-brightness, 0.35-mm aluminum gallium indium phosphide SMT chip LEDs have been developed for applications that require thinner packages, such as cell phones and PDAs.
The RGB Super-luminosity TAF device can be used as a light source for mobile phones with built-in camera functionality, or as a backlight for instrument panels or LCDs, the company said. It also is a design alternative for single-die white LEDs for small electronics equipment, said Herb Moeller, senior product-marketing manager at Sharp.
The chip's six-pin TAF package, 2.4 mm thick, is able to use a larger drive current without an increased degradation of the LED. The six-pin configuration allows series connection of LEDs as a backlight to drive colors independently with the same current, Sharp said, thus reducing power consumption and offering better control of both heat output and color.
Sharp has also expanded its lines of surface-mount chip LEDs with the introduction of the 0.35-mm AlGaInP products. When used in membrane switches for white goods, these chips eliminate the need for one or more spacers in the membrane switch, Moeller said.
The LEDs are said to provide a bright backlight without high-energy requirements. Versions are available in thin 1608 chip sizes with the same 0.35-mm footprint. Available colors are yellow-green, blue, green, amber, sunset orange, orange and red.
The RBG Super-luminosity TAF LED chips are available in production volumes, priced from $2 to $3 for quantities of 5,000. The 0.35-mm SMT chip LEDs, also available in production quantities, sell for 5 cents to $1.25, depending on color, in similar quantities.
Meanwhile, Sharp has also begun marketing its 1616 dichromatic LEDs and its line of full-color chip LEDs. The dichromatic high-luminosity chip LEDs have two different colors in the same package, and are used in cell phones, backlights or other applications that require multiple color options from one LED. This package offers the option of having either die turned on or having both go on simultaneously to produce a third color. Similarly, the four-pin, full-color 1616 chip LED integrates three colors in one chip. It is smaller than TAF LEDs and uses less power.
