Eden Prairie, Minn. - A 35-Mbaud isolated RS-485 differential-bus transceiver from NVE Corp. here is said to be more than 100 times faster than other RS-485 interface devices, which typically don't exceed 250 kbaud. The IL485 IsoLoop surface-mount CMOS device is intended for use in noisy industrial applications and large local-area networks.
John Myers, vice president of NVE's Isolator Business Group, described the part as a high-speed, low-cost alternative to optoisolated transceivers. The logic-to-logic device is designed to be integrated with NVE's proprietary giant-magnetoresistive technology to deliver bidirectional data communication on balanced transmission lines.
Its monolithic galvanic-isolation barrier supports a common-mode voltage range of plus/minus 2,500 V, and is said to make the part immune to the ground and signal differentials that could otherwise interrupt data transmissions or destroy nonisolated RS-485 devices.
The device, packaged in a 16-pin SOIC and specified for -40 degrees C to 80 degrees C operation, is priced at $5.20 in quantities of 1,000.
