SUNNYVALE, CALIF. Maxim Integrated Products has added two comparators, the MAX9040 and MAX9050, with rail-to-rail inputs and outputs and an on-board reference. They are intended for battery voltage monitoring and are said to eliminate premature end-of-life readings.
The MAX9040 operates from a 2.5- to 5.5-volt supply and has a 2.048-V reference voltage, which represents a 500-microvolt least significant bit in 12-bit systems. The MAX9050 operates from a +2.7-V to +5.5-V supply and provides a 2.5-V reference voltage.
A-grade versions of both comparators offer 0.4 percent initial accuracy, a 6 part-per-million per degrees C temperature coefficient and a 400-nanosecond propagation delay.
Both comparators use internal hysteresis and crowbar current limiting, cutting current consumption while switching at high frequencies. The MAX9040 and MAX9050 come in 5-pin SOT23 packages, priced from 96 cents in lots of 1,000.
