Milpitas, Calif. - Intersil's AnyAdapter ISL6292 lithium ion/polymer battery charger IC accepts a wide range of voltage sources, including voltage and current-limited wall plug modules and USB bus power.
The low-noise linear source, which is especially suited to smart phones and PDA applications, comes in a 10-pad, 3 x 3-mm dual flat no-lead (DFN) package that offers, said the company, the industry's highest thermal efficiency.
Working from a 4.3- to 7-volt input, the ISL6292 operates in the traditional pre-charge, constant-current, constant-voltage sequence in concert with the device's Thermaguard temperature-controlled charge-rate protection circuitry, a thermal-foldback design.
When powered by a current-limited adapter, the chip minimizes thermal dissipation, in which case the IC offers the thermal efficiency typically found with pulse or switching chargers. The chip's AnyAdapter technology is said to cut heat by several hundred percent over alternative solutions. Using one resistor, the user can program charge current up to a maximum of 2 amps.
The part's internal, current-trimmed current-sense circuit guarantees 10 percent charging accuracy at 4.1 or 4.2 V (to 1 percent voltage accuracy). It also provides a fully programmable end-of-charge point, but allows charging to continue until the chip's safety timer automatically terminates it.
The unit, priced at 95 cents each in 1,000s, is also offered in a 16-pad 4 x 4-mm QFN and a 16-pad 5 x 5-mm QFN. All of these packages are thermally enhanced and offer low thermal resistance for heat transfer to the board. Lead-free versions are also available. Evaluation boards are available, too, the ISL6292EVAL1 for the 3 x 3 DFN, and the -EVAL2 for the 4 x 4 QFN.
