Myrtle Beach, S.C. - AVX Corp.'s stackable MMA surface-mount board connector should enable designers to maximize high-speed signal integrity and provide high-pin-count capabilities while saving board space for parallel stacking of mezzanine printed-circuit boards, the company said. AVX is targeting computer, medical, networking, telecommunications and test/instrumentation markets, especially where system bandwidths are in excess of 5 GHz.
"The next-generation MMA high-speed connector is the first of its kind, offering a solution for critical high-pin-count applications," said Tom Anderson, product manager for AVX's Interconnect Product Group. Anderson believes system designers need a higher-density connector that does not jeopardize any speed capabilities in such applications as CPU configuration and upgrade modules, module-to-board interfaces for optical transceiver modules and mezzanine board stacking.
Key features of the 100-position MMA connector design are its fine-pitch (1 x 1-mm pitch) contact spacing, dual active-cantilever spring contacts and hermaphroditic design. It also offers expansion into higher pin counts above 400 contacts while supporting increased signal speeds, according to AVX. The fine pitch offers a 35 percent space savings over competitive products, Anderson said, and the dual-cantilever spring contacts provide lower insertion and withdrawal forces without jeopardizing a reliable connection.
Unlike a traditional plug-and-receptacle solution, the hermaphroditic design with a symmetrical insulator offers users cost and inventory advantages by enabling two identical connectors to be rotated 180 degrees and then mated, according to Anderson.
"The unique low insertion force and 1-mm pitch allow the hermaphroditic connectors to be easily mated and unmated," he said.
Key electrical characteristics include insulation resistance of 50,000 Mohms at 100 Vdc, a current rating of 0.5 amp, contact resistance of 20 Mohms maximum and a dielectric withstanding voltage of 750 Vac.
The contact material is beryllium copper with a contact plating made of 30 microinches of gold over 50 microinches of nickel.
Stack height is 5 mm and the durability rating is 50 cycles. The mating force is 1,170 grams and the unmating force is 200 grams. The operating temperature range is -25 degrees C to 85 degrees C.
The MMA connector, which uses a surface-mount solder ball design for attachment to the printed-circuit board, provides a reliable assembly process and a uniform solder ball geometry that maximizes high-speed signal integrity, Anderson said.
Individual connectors are available on tape and reel and multiconnector, high-pin-count modules are available in pick-and-place trays. AVX plans to expand the 10 x 10 connector line with additional pin counts and stack heights.
A 100-position MMA connector is priced at $8.50 each in quantities of 1,000. Delivery is approximately eight weeks.
