Sunnyvale, Calif. - Catalyst Semiconductor Inc.'s first white-LED driver IC has been developed for Li-ion battery-powered systems. The CAT32 operates as a switch-mode, 1.2-MHz fixed-frequency, constant-current boost regulator with load-fault protection against an open circuit. The device offers single-resistor LED current programming, pulse-width modulation and dc-level brightness control as well as "zero" power shutdown and current limiting. The driver automatically regulates drive current for up to four series LEDs.
The driver IC is available in either a 1-mm-thick six-lead SOT23 package or a 3 x 4.9-mm TDFN that's 0.8 mm thick, both fit for cell phone and PDA markets. Prices start at 55 cents in 10,000-piece quantities. Devices are now available.
