Milpitas, Calif. - Linear Technology's bidirectional coulomb counter IC is designed to accurately measure battery charging and depletion in handheld PC and portable product applications.
It monitors current through a small external sense resistor placed between the battery and its load or charge circuit (small capacitor also required). The LTC4150 indicates charge and discharge of the battery (one- or two-cell lithium-ion and three- to six-cell NiCd or NiMH batteries) by means of a series of output pulses over a single communications pin that can be counted by a microcontroller, with a polarity signal determining charge or discharge. The system then can estimate the battery's remaining capacity at any point.
The LTC4150, packaged in an MSOP-10 and is priced starting at $1.50 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
