Wayne, N.J. -- Agilent Technologies Inc. has reworked its proprietary film bulk-acoustic-resonator (FBAR) process technology to achieve a 66 percent reduction in the size of RF duplexer and RF filter devices for code-division multiple-access PCS phones operating in the 1,900-MHz band.
Since introducing the homegrown process several years ago, Agilent has applied FBAR mainly to CDMA flip-phone designs. Now, through a process change, Agilent has been able to eliminate the need for a ceramic package and will deliver FBAR devices in plastic packages to phone designers or in die form to transceiver IC designers, thus reducing the size of the products by up to 66 percent, said Philip Gadd, worldwide marketing manager at Agilent (www.semiconductor.agilent.com).
The changed process involves a capacitor wafer and a filter wafer that can be bonded together to build a hermetically sealed filter device. "You can also flip the filter right on an IC design," Gadd said.
Agilent claims that it has created filter devices that are under 1 square millimeter using the upgraded FBAR process. This size is too small for the manufacturing processes used by today's handset OEMs, Gadd said, so Agilent crafted plastic packages to house the devices.
Two devices have been developed using the new FBAR process for CDMA phones operating in the 1,900-MHz band. The ACMD-7401 duplexer delivers a 44-dB noise-blocking capability and 2.2-dB typical insertion loss in the receive band, as well as 54-dB interferer blocking and 1.8-dB typical insertion loss. The ACPF-7002 full-band filter provides an 1,850-MHz to 1,910-MHz passband, 33-dB minimum attenuation from 1,930 to 1,990 MHz and 2.5-dB typical insertion loss.
The ACMD-7401 is delivered in a 5 x 5 x 1.4-mm package while the ACPF-7002 is offered in a 2 x 1.6 x 1-mm package. Both devices will start shipping in February. In 100,000-unit quantities, each ACMD-7401 will be priced at $2.45, while the ACPF-7002 will be available for 54 cents.
