SHANGHAI — RF Micro Devices, Inc. intends to open a R&D center here to meet increasing demand for design-ins in the world's largest market for handsets.
The new center will increase internal design capacity of front-end solutions and transceivers to shorten design cycle times and reduce manufacturing and shipping costs to ODMs and OEMs in the region. RFMD did not provide details on how much it will spend or how many engineers it will hire.
"RFMD's continued expansion into the Greater China market demonstrates our focus on supporting the local manufacturers in this territory," said Greg Thompson, RFMD vice president of worldwide sales and applications engineering, in a statement
RFMD expanded a module assembly facility and test and tape and reel facility in Beijing that started last year with the hope to increase internal assembly capacity by approximately 50 percent, or about 25 percent of the company's assembly requirements.
RFMD employs about 1,000 people in Greater China, including Taiwan.
