LONDON Optical switch specialist Polatis Inc. is to start production in a facility in Poland as a response to increasing market demand for and application of its switching technology to new sectors.
The Poland facility will come on stream this Autumn, and will augment the production capacity of its other facilities, whose total demand is expected to triple this calendar year, says Polatis (Cambridge, England and Billerica, MA).
The plant in Poland, which in time should have a workforce of 100, will focus on manufacture of standard products for telecom and instrumentation markets, while existing facilities in Cambridge and Boston (U.S.) will focus on specialized defense products and new technology development.
"This is an exciting period of growth for our company, and the new facility in Poland illustrates the increasing demand for our high performance products in the marketplace," said Dave Lewis, CEO of Polatis. "We selected Poland as an ideal location for expansion due to its combination of a highly talented workforce and excellent cost advantages."
Lewis adds the additional plant will allow Polatis "to ramp up production and scale our operations to meet both near-term customer needs and large volume programs where we are in trials now, such as those in FTTH and backbone network operations."
Polatis Inc. was formed in late 2005 through the merger of optical switch subsystem and module makers Continuum Photonics Inc. and Polatis.
