It will be a tough time for another processor-type of company. And the claim of having the software upgradeability of a DSP, and high-level programming, with the hardware performance of an FPGA is nothing new. XMOS will have to compete with the industry IP and processor stalwarts such as CEVA, Tensilica, ARM, MIPS as well as Silicon Hive, Coresonic, Bluewonder. And at the high end, there are many new entrants such as Coherent Logix, ElementCXI, Nethra, Tabula, Tilera, etc. Somewhere in the space of processors for Handsets, Infrastructure, Audio/Video/Multimedia processing, Network processing, and Defense - XMOS needs to find a unique niche, and build up an ecosystem and market segment. In this business and technology climate, that is easier said than done.

The XMOS company product is an interesting one quad 400MHz processors with switch fabric support logic built in. I wonder what the next step will be for this company. Will they expand their offerings or add to the programming languages supported on the chipset? I look forward to hearing from the new CEO his thoughts and future direction for the company.
