There seems to be a forecast war going on between the market analysts--this morning ABI Research forecast that 11 million media tablets would be sold in 2010 and now iSuppli is one-upping with a forecast of 12.9 million iPads alone! But its not just analysts who are shaken up--the iPad has shaken up the whole computing device industry. There will be a dozen clones on the market by the end of the year, and in 2012 there will be well organized, concerted efforts by powerhouses like HP, Sony and Samsung to surf on Apple wake and eventually overwhelm it with a tsunami of touchscreen-tablets--similar to the wave of Android devices that followed the iPhone's success.

We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
