It might be the strategy is to build more solutions based on Atmel chipset.

Seems like a great biz opp- a CM that specializes in demo/eval board production and documentation. IC MFRs often see these as necessary but many are not very good at the process. The boards are often hard to get with long lead times and poor documentation; forcing you to call the MFR and convince them you are worthy of your time for their assistance. This model of the MFR holding the EE's hand may have worked years ago, but I'd bet others (like me) would rather buy a board and read the in's and outs myself.

I do not think Atmel sees itself as a competitor of Xilinx and Achronix (the latter is very small anyway). They are leaders in microcontroller and touch solutions.

Not sure how significant is this announcement to be honest. It looks like getting hold of some IP on the cheap to me.

Can anyone highlight the significance of this acquisition? How can this help Atmel compete better?

Excellent decision. Hope it helps ATMEL to come back and compete better with Xilinx and Achronix.

Makes sense, since Atmel decided to not sell the Aerospace division.
