SAN JOSE, Calif. - Junshi Yamaguchi, chairman and representative director of Renesas Electronics Corp., is retiring amid an ongoing reorganization at the Japanese chip maker.
Yamaguchi, who has held the post since April of last year, will serve as an advisor at Renesas Electronics. Previously, he was president and CEO of NEC Electronics Corp. No replacement was named. ''The position of chairman is being eliminated, which is why there was no replacement announced. This is being done to streamline the management structure,'' according to a spokeswoman for Renesas.
It appears Yasushi Akao, representative director and president, is running Renesas. New members of the board will officially be appointed following the adoption of the resolutions at the general meetings of shareholders, to be held on June 28, 2011.
In addition, the company also announced changes in its organizational structure by forming a new SOC and marketing unit.
Renesas Electronics began on April 1, 2010, after the merger of NEC Electronics Corp. and Renesas Technology Corp. Since then, Renesas Electronics has implemented its “100-day Project” by reviewing all of the former companies' respective management resources.
As part of the effort, Renesas in July said it planned to cut nearly 10 percent of its workforce, or about 4,000 jobs, by the end of 2010. It is also moving towards a fab-lite strategy. It will use foundries for devices at 28-nm and below. And it will no longer invest in new fabs.
On Thursday (Feb. 24), Renesas announced the results of its early retirement program for employees in Japan, announced on Oct. 27, 2010. The company received some 1,487 ''applicants'' for the program.
The company is seeking to become profitable. It recently posted a 17.6 billion yen loss ($215.2 million) on sales of 275.2 billion yen ($3.37 billion) for the most recent quarter.
Renesas Mobile commenced operation in December 2010. It combined the wireless modem business acquired from Nokia Corp. with Renesas Electronics' mobile multimedia business, which belonged to the second SoC Business Unit.
The remaining SoC businesses within the company will become part of the new SOC Business Unit. It will be responsible for businesses in industrial, imaging, home multimedia and digital consumer electronics.
Separately, Renesas established a new Marketing Business Unit. ''By leveraging the strength of its microcontroller (MCU) business that boasts the industry's top share, the new Marketing Business Unit will engage in cultivating new opportunities from around the world and expand businesses worldwide,'' according to Renesas.
''The new Marketing Business Unit also will operate in line with the company's strategy to promote cooperation between the core MCU business and the Analog & Power Devices business and further strengthen profitability by integrating the marketing forces of both of these businesses,'' according to the firm.
Separately, Renesas and its subsidiary, Renesas Mobile, recently announced the first release of the R-Car series of systems-on-chip (SoCs), the R-Car M1 series, offering low power consumption for next-generation dashboard-mounted car navigation systems and supporting advanced human machine interfaces (HMI).
The new R-Car M1 series of SoCs are Renesas Electronics' first members of the R-Car series, which represent the integration of the company's SH-Navi series and EMMA Car series products. These devices have had high adoption rates in car infotainment systems, such as dashboard-mounted car navigation systems. The R-Car M1 series of SoCs have been developed for mid-range systems which are expected to become the highest volume segment in the market and include the R-Car M1A and R-Car M1S as its lineup.
The R-Car M1 series of SoCs share the following key features: (1) Integration of the dedicated circuitry for intelligent multimedia processing saves approximately 92 percent of power in full 1920 × 1080-pixel HD (high-definition) video decoding relative to executing the same function in software on previous products; (2) Dedicated power supply IC for use in a voltage regulator reduces power consumption by approximately 20 percent from Renesas Electronics' existing products; (3) The PowerVR SGX graphics core enhances 3D rendering performance, allowing designers to create realistic graphical user interfaces (GUIs, Note 3) and improved user operability; (4) Incorporation of ARM Cortex-A9 and Renesas Electronics SH-4A CPU cores operating at a maximum 800 megahertz (MHz), delivering processing performance of up to 3.7 Giga Instructions Per Second (GIPS.)
