SANTA CLARA, Calif.—EDA and IP vendor Synopsys Inc.'s top executive said Monday (March 28) that Synopsys would leverage the power of cloud computing to offer verification services on a massive scale by putting hundreds or even thousands of computers to work at one time on running simulations on customer designs using its VCS Verilog compiled code simulator.
Synopsys Chairman and CEO Aart de Geus told an audience at the company's SNUG San Jose users' group event here Monday that using a "surge" in computing resources would allow designers to run a number of verification simulations in days or weeks that may have taken many months otherwise. De Geus acknowledged that the business model for the service remains a work in progress, but that engagements would be quoted on a per hour, per computer basis.
De Geus said Synopsys is currently discussing surge verification engagements with some customers and quoting prices now. "We're open for business," de Geus said.
De Geus added that he believes cloud computing—services available over the Internet that run on massive remote data centers typically managed by third parties—and software-as-a-service are concepts that will play an increasing role in EDA.
Because of obvious sensitivities about design data floating around in the clouds, de Geus said security is a paramount concern for such a service. He added that security concerns across all industries were prompting rapid changes in the level of security available.
Synopsys has engaged with Amazon.com for the data center resources needed to offer surge verification, de Geus said. He added that Synopsys has used similar services internally for some time.
Last month, panelists at DesignCon panel—including Hasmukh Ranjan, vice president of information technology at Synopsys—described EDA vendors as still in "learning mode" about cloud computing, still assessing how the model could work for EDA.
