SAN FRANCISCO—Freescale Semiconductor Inc. Wednesday (June 22) announced a collaboration on a memory module with NOR flash memory vendor Spansion Inc. and collaboration deals around embedded software with Wind River Systems Inc. and QNX Software Systems Ltd. during the company's Freescale Technology Forum event.
Freescale (Austin, Texas) said it would collaborate with Spansion (Sunnyvale, Calif.) on a memory module for the Freescale Tower System modular development platform that provides design engineers more flexibility in prototyping embedded applications, including factory automation, industrial computers, medical devices, point of sales and robotics. The Spansion peripheral module will expand the code and data storage capabilities of the Tower System and support the increasing use of 2-D and 3-D graphics in today's electronics, according to Spansion.
The Spansion-designed memory module uses PISMO 2-compliant memory cards to allow designers to interchange different memories and/or densities for rapid prototyping, such as Spansion GL parallel NOR flash memory and Spansion FL serial NOR Flash memory among other volatile and non-volatile memories, Spansion said.
The memory module complements all Freescale controller boards including Kinetis, ColdFire, and Power Architecture Technologies, the companies said. Freescale is expected to go into production with the memory expansion module in the fourth quarter.
"Memory choice has a direct impact on the user experience, including system responsiveness and the speed of booting up electronics,' said Stephan Rosner, vice president of systems and software engineering at Spansion. "This memory module will provide a fast, inexpensive way for engineers to test different memories to ensure optimal performance."
Freescale said the agreement with Wind River reinforces the companies’ longstanding collaboration and provides advanced software solutions for QorIQ and PowerQUICC customers across Wind River’s embedded operating systems. The agreement broadens availability and improves time-to-market for developer solutions engineered to optimize the performance, ease-of-use and energy efficiency of Freescale’s product families targeting networking, aerospace/defense, and other key markets, Freescale said.
As embedded multicore processors grow increasingly complex, operating systems and tools must be “silicon-aware” and capable of fully leveraging the advantages of sophisticated SoC designs, Freescale said. Enhanced collaboration between Freescale and Wind River is intended to address this need for the ultimate benefit of QorIQ and PowerQUICC users, the company said.
Also Wednesday, Freescale and embedded software provider QNX Software. agreed to collaborate on the development of solutions for Freescale's QorIQ and PowerQUICC processor families. The companies said they intend to share IP, invest jointly in product and technology roadmaps, and work together on go-to-market activities. Joint development will initially focus on the use of QNX operating system software, middleware, development tools, and engineering services to create solutions for the medical, industrial automation and general embedded markets, the companies said.
