LONDON – Quantance Inc., a developer of high-speed power supply management ICs, has announced it has raised $11 million in Series C funding. Investors include TD Fund, Granite Ventures, InterWest Partners and DoCoMo Capital.
The money will be used to expand the Quantance family of power management products, including ultrafast power supplies for 4G devices. The latest round of finance brings the total raised by Quantance (San Mateo, Calif.) since its formation in 2006, to $30 million.
Vikas Vinayak, CEO and co-founder of Quantance, claims to have arrived at certain mathematical insights into power supply design that have allowed the company to develop generic technology that can improve the speed and efficiency of voltage conversion through the use of analog feedback and digital control. The company's first product was the a form of envelope-tracking technology to control the power supplied to the power amplifer in 3G, 3.5G and 4G mobile devices.
"The envelope-tracking was a first application. The radio product is doing pretty well. But we realized there are a lot of other applications. Conventional power supplies cannot track changing requirements quickly enough and end up being over-specified." Vinayak said that the Quantance technology could be used to reduce the size of output capacitors and other aspects. He added that it is equally suited to magnetically isolated power supplies although initially Quantance would be focused on non-isolated dc-to-dc converters.
In the PA application the technology makes for faster uplink data rates, better network coverage and better battery life for users smartphones, tablets and data cards.
The funding will allow Quantance to design ICs for other voltage conversion requirements on the handset motherboard, or into other application such as single-board computers, Vinayak said. It will also allow the company to expand from 18 employees now to about 25.
"We are all looking for longer battery life and better data performance from our mobile devices. To achieve this, a power supply must constantly adapt to deliver power only when it is needed, maximizing both performance and economy," said Vinayak, in a statement. "Yet, batteries and power supplies have not kept up with the consumer’s voracious appetite for accessing mobile content and applications when and where they want them. Some generate voltage efficiently, others generate it quickly – but none can do both simultaneously. Quantance’s ultrafast power supply bridges that divide to deliver the full promise of 4G wireless and enable the next generation of computer-intensive mobile and server processing."
I do see potential of this idea, most of the high speed processors in cells phone are struggling with sudden changes in demand of power and maintaining good power drop. Current solution include slow ramp leading to more power burning or sub optimal performance during peak demand.
