It looks OpenMP-esque to me. I am a big fan of the OpenMP approach (unlike seanj :-)) which is why I wish OpenAcc all the best.

Without full support for all the GPUs/CPUs out there I find it hard to see this effort succeeding. It looks like an attempt to push forward their own platforms with an "open" standard. It would be most interesting if OpenCL starts to provide a similar set of parallel computing code indicators, then we could see how things progress.

Co-mingling the serial and parallel code is not an efficient use of programmer time. Look to much _higher_ level constructs like Aparapi or Clyther. Pat Hanrahan has done awesome work in domain specific languages targeting GPGPU. High level tools should target the OpenCL runtime but programmers should, for the most part no operate at that level.

"Nvidia says it hopes other firms will be quick to adopt it as a standard" Yup. Like how Nvidia put so much effort into supporting OpenCL. It is obvious that folks who have huge computation requirements will support anything that will lead to cheaper computation for them. What is also obvious to someone who has done programming in this space is that widespread use of this kind of computing depends on *open* tool chains where getting screwed by a single vendor is not going to happen ("been there, done that")

How is this different from OpenCL, Which is an open standard being worked on / maintained by Khronos ?? If this OpenAcc is a competitor for OpenCL, then i hope and pray that OpenAcc dies a quick and very very painful death.

This is what Nvidia needs to do to dominate this market. It is the Microsoft way - rule and dominate.

OpenACC is an Open Source Initiative or it is just the name using word Open? It if is open source it will be adopted by the entire industry otherwise it will not be adoptable easily by the other companies.
