Pretty impressive numbers. That's roughly $15 billion in yearly revenues which means that only Samsung and Intel is larger (if the comparison make sense, somewhat different businesses). Does anyone know the percentage of world production i terms of processed wafers that TSMC has? Would be interesting to know. My guestimate: 15 billion is roughly 5% of the total semiconductor revenues. If TSMC production cost is 50% of the end user price then TSMC would have to produce 10% of all wafers in the world to achieve that kind of revenues.

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
