They're going to need 28nm capacity if their next generation integrated LTE chip is going to make its way into the next iPhone.

Wonder if other foundries similarly tight at 28 nm.

Better get those 28-nm capacity, if you're going to hit revenue goals. I wonder what's the reason for the shortage? High in demand? -Ricardo Member of the Patexia Semiconductor Group (http://bit.ly/HeyQJO)

@Ricardo, since there are relatively few 28 nm customers, though growing, I suspect fewer good tools for 28 nm. It should be true across the board, i.e., for other foundries.

Hi Qualcomm, what is the current yield rate for 28nm process over at TSMC? Is it like 30%? To waht extent (%) will each OEM will be allocated for your MSM8960?

I think it's partly due to yield problems.

Similarly, AMD also recently stopped relying on GlobalFoundries solely for 28 nm.

Both Qualcomm and TSMC say they are happy with yields and that yields are as expected. But I don't think anyone has put a number on that.

An interesting point for this discussion: AMD paid dearly for the right to have 28-nm products manufactured at other foundries, yet 28-nm capacity is constrained. I assume that before AMD took that step they made sure they could get the capacity they needed.

Yap! Your sister won't be using competitor's fab for no reason.
