LONDON – Texas Instruments Inc. retained its position in 2011 as the leading manufacturer of power management ICs, according to a ranking produced by market researcher IHS.
TI increased its sales of power management ICs in 2011 by 25 percent to pull further ahead of STMicroelectronics and Infineon Technologies, in second and third places respectively. TI commanded 10.0 percent of the $31.8 billion market for power management ICs according IHS. ST held on to 7.1 percent of the market while Infineon grew to achieve a 6.6 percent market share.
The other firms to make major advances in the top ten ranking were Mitsubishi Electric, which increased its sales by 51.7 percent over 2010 and On Semiconductor, which increased its sales by 22.3 percent.
In its market definition IHS includes circuits such as voltage regulators and voltage references, as well as power interface ICs and application-specific power management ICs. Other important power management products are power discretes, such as power transistors greater than 1 watt, rectifiers greater than 0.5 amperes, and thyristors.
TI was able to grow its sales with help from the acquisition of National Semiconductor. Arizona-based On Semiconductor broke into the top ten after its purchase of Sanyo. Mitsubishi’s leap from eight place in 2010 to fourth displaced fellow Japanese firm Renesas Electronics, which dropped to fifth place, down from fourth.

In his unique in-depth analysis the ranking is very, very different and includes Infineon, Rohm, Sanken and many others. Stay tuned...

To Peter -- thank you for a stream of excellent articles. However, if I may say -- the IHS table is not correct in several respects, including that it includes a mix of:
-- Catalog ICs (function-specific + ASSPs)
-- Power discrete (diodes and transistors)
-- Parts of custom (like in ON Semi about $460M of AMI business)
-- TI’s number also includes the entire CY11 of revenues, which is incorrect. Gartner correctly recognizes National revenues until 9/23/11 as non-TI revenues
