LONDON – A previously announced security and payments joint venture between ARM, Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient has been launched under the name Trustonic
Technology from Trustonic Ltd. (Cambridge, England) is intended to make paying for things using electronic equipment simpler and faster, the company said. The company is chartered with development of a trusted execution environment built upon the ARM TrustZone technology and compliant with GlobalPlatform specifications. Trustonic combines TrustZone technology found within ARM-based system-chips with security and management software contributed by Gemalto NV (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and Giesecke & Devrient GmbH (Munich, Germany).
Trustonic announced that it already has relations with 20th Century Fox, Cisco, Mastercard, Nvidia, Samsung, Sprint and Symantec, amongst others.
Under the original terms of the deal announced in April 2012 ARM owns 40 percent of the joint venture and Gemalto and G&D own 30 percent each.
The company is led by CEO Ben Cade, previously general manager of ARM's secure services division. Jon Geater, chief technology officer, also comes from ARM's secure services division. Chris Jones is the chief operations officer for Trustonic, and was previously vice president of licensing for the processor division of ARM.
Stephan Spitz is the executive vice president of engineering and was previously the director of strategic planning for Giesecke & Devrient. Oliver Leger is set to become the executive vice president responsible for sales and marketing. He is currently the general manager of personal and consumer devices at Trusted Logic, a subsidiary of Gemalto.
The formation of the joint venture has been approved by the European Commission and Chinese authorities on condition that ARM provides the joint venture's competitors with information on current and future versions of TrustZone and other equivalent architectures that ARM may release in the future and that ARM does not design its IP in a way to degrade the performance of third-party trusted execution environments.
