LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — MEMS oscillators have finally penetrated the 10Gbit Ethernet market thanks to Integrated Device Technologies' (IDT, San Jose, Calif.) new MEMS oscillator. The oscillator's unique piezo-electric material (pMEMS) offers better performance at a lower cost and is housed in an ultra-tiny package compared with legacy quartz crystals.
IDT's new 4H-series pMEMS differential oscillators measure just 3.2-by-2.5 millimeters (also available in a legacy package that matches the data input-output pin-out of a quartz crystal). Frequency can be set by the designer (up to 625-MHz) plus allows fine-tuning offset frequencies during operation, to further minimize bit-error rate and to facilitate margin testing for optimal performance of finished designs.

"We are already shipping samples to 10Gbit Ethernet vendors of what we believe is the world's lowest jitter differential MEMS oscillator," said Harmeet Bhugra, director of MEMS at IDT. "Our 100-femtosecond phase jitter results in many fewer bit-rate errors in a device that is 25 percent cheaper and much smaller than competing quartz crystal solutions."
IDT claims its piezoelectric material, which permits 10-time higher base frequencies than silicon-MEMS oscillators, also offers 40-times better reliability than quartz-crystal oscillators, as well as better EMI immunity and resistance to vibration and shock.
